One Numbering System - One Classification To Rule Them All!

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

I'm sure there's a pre-internet history story behind the multiple numbering/classification systems for coins but what's stopping the hobby community in 2022 from collaborating on one classification system?

For pennies in particular we got:
coppercions
Wexler
Variety Vista (CONECA?)
Crawford
Fivaz-Stanton

There was another one I saw the other day but forgot the naming. So that's at least 6 different systems. Again, historically, pre-internet it's not hard to figure out why but has there been any modern attempt to, ya know, work together and unify behind a definitive single classification system?

*buckling in for story time*

These sites are are independent made by independent people with their own ideas and systems of doing things.

While it may be slightly more easy to get them to combine than, say Pepsi, RC Cola, and Coke becoming one company, each one of these resources likely would not want to abandon the system they have worked so hard in their own lives to develop.
Common grading company shortcomings & resulting co$tly mi$take$ to collectors (using Kennedy No FG halves):

So you think it's an ego thing, eh? It would be great to have standards like other industries and hobbies. Ya know like ISO, W3 community council, Creative Commons, ECMA (JavaScript standards), etc. etc. Just seems like a lot more could be accomplished working together rather than apart. Certainly less violations of the DRY principal: Don't Repeat Yourself

It is most certainly an ego thing, people want their name on it when we really need a generic and non personal classification system for varieties.

I don't want to assume ego for everyone involved b/c I do not know them personally.

...but...yeah...probably :D
