1$-Predidential Dollar-Weak Edge Lettering examples?

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

I have some Presidential Dollars I am going through and having a hard time figuring out the difference between "Weak Edge Lettering" and "normal" edge lettering. The only example I can find on the interwebs is from this site actually: https://coinauctionshelp.com/sacagawea- ... int-error/

The problem with that singular photo is, well, there's only one, a few more examples for clarity would be nice but also it's still ambiguous between the two. I mean what about regular wear of which these dollars tend to have a lot on the edges.

Has anyone come up with a specific worded definition like "deep groove, 5nm deep, each segment wide as the next" yada yada?

I have a whole pile of dollars that seem to have "weak" lettering to me but obviously I didn't just get a dozen or more varieties in one box unless this is a somewhat common variety...?

I was speaking in general terms not necessarily talking about a specific example but here is one anyway.

The lettering you see is the same lettering I see on all John Tylers regardless of position (A/B) so I find it difficult to discern whether that is "normal" or "weak" with nothing to compare it to. I'm assuming it's normal because again, what would be the chances of all my picks being a variety. But begs the question, what's "weak".

Some other series have what appears to be "stronger" lettering (basically thicker but seems to be same depth) but that could be an apples to oranges comparison if that's just the standard way those two different coins were struck.

Can anyone post an example of weak edge lettering that they have or have a link to other than the one provided in the original post?

The edge of the coin wears in circulation just like the faces of it do. So for circulated coins, you can expect weaker lettering on the edges.
