Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S
Hello Forum,
I spotted an oddity on a Proof Lincoln Cent 1976. I zoomed in on the
s-mintmark and I discovered what I believe is another, but reversed,
s-mintmark. When I looked it up on Coppercoins and Variety Vista. There
was no such variety or error in their listings... Maybe you can help me?
Tanx!
Greetings from Holland, from Eva.

Hello Eva! This is what shows up on the Pics., okay? I see a "scratch" or something going through the "S" on the fourth picture.

Re: Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S
Well Sal, that is absolutely not the case.
There is a clear 'something' underneath the upper (last) S.
So, no scratch.
But tanx! Eva

Appears to be some type of minor inconsequential interior deterioration??
I think the most of RPM's appear to be minor and inconsequential, but that is the
sport, right?!
How come thy art so sure about that? I think I can learn a lot of the answer to that question.
TANX a lot! Eva.

Re: Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S
Die deterioration is a completely different thing than a re-punched mint mark. A deteriorated die is the metals of the die chipping away due to it striking coins, and a re-punched mint mark is the die being punched multiple times with the mint mark punch.excoin wrote: ↑Wed May 18, 2022 7:18 pm Appears to be some type of minor inconsequential interior deterioration??

Unfortunately your coin here appears to be the first one, die deterioration, not a RPM. Hopefully this helps you understand this in some way.

Re: Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S UPDATE!
Well, forum!
I wasn't satisfied with the answers an finally I found the only answer
http://lincolncentresource.com/San_Fran ... tyles.html
This fat mintmark is named MMS-009 and is used ONLY on Proofs from
1975 - 1979
I am happy now!

Re: Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S
I have to admit, I am a bit confused about this one. I know Paul is way over my pay grade on coins, so I am aksing for help in understanding what I found when looking into this:
That lincolncentresource.com website says from 1952 to 1974, the San Francisco mint used the Tall S on their cents (MM-008), so in 1970-S the Tall S was used and should be what is on Eva's coin.: The site has the Tall S and Blob S (mm-009) both pictured under their 1974-S cent listing b/c both mm-008 and MM-009 were used that year.
Then I combined the pics from the website and the pics Eva posted:
That pic of the Tall S from the website looks very different from what is on Eva's coin. And the MM on her coin seems to have the same features as the Blob S:
I also note the Tall S has the loops of the S open (and ant could crawl inside). But eh Blob S is "closed" and the opening is raised up off of the surface (the ant would need to step up and then squeeze inside).

Re: Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S
From what I understand, is going on is that Eva found on The Lincoln Cen Resource that the coin she has is referred as an MMS-009. For 1974 both the Proof and business strikes had the MMS-009. Next, the 1975-1979. Since the San Francisco mint stopped minting coins for circulation in 1975. Eva's 1976-S is an impaired proof coin, thus making Eva's MMS-009 a normal 1976 Proof coin.

Makes sense DS!
How in the world did I see Eva's as a 1970-S and not the 1976-S?
Hey Earle42!
Yes?

Re: Lincoln cent 1976 PROOF S over reversed S
All you proved was your mint mark was normal as we stated, they just gave it a catalogue number to ID normal mint marks. So it's not a variety or special in any way.
