1983 P Kennedy: Die clash

#1 Unread post by ccbcs »

1983 P Kennedy. Die clash found in bank roll.
Question: Are there degrees of die clash... weak, medium, strong? Or is it simply a "yes it is" or "no it's not"? Thank you.

Had no idea there could be a prior die clash on a coin with an existing die clash or that they would polish it off. Is there is video or somewhere to read on this "prior" die clash? Thank you.

The 1983 P is known for various degrees of clashing. I don't know what happened that year, but you can find many pictures of different clashes online for this date/MM. Some are VERY hard to very light. I would consider yours a strong clash (I am a Kennedy specialist).

Few of these coins have what I personally call (this is not an official term) the stegosaurus marks on the neck, but yours does. Typically these marks do not show. It is not hard to find an 83 with a weak clash (interesting I just got two tonight and will likely put them back!), but yours is, IMO, a really nice one.

I'm not aware of any video that exists ........ because I do not watch YouTube videos regarding numismatics!!

Your obverse image clearly shows a previous polishing around the central device figure.

This polishing and re-clashing can be fairly common

As Paul says, this can be fairly common. Remember a clash is just an accidental hitting of the dies with no planchet in between them.

As I said, 1983 was a bad year for the mint making these. I have to wonder if they had old machinery wearing out or something else. There are a lot of clashed examples for the 83-P as well as different design positions on those clashes. Look online for pics of clashed 83-P halves and note the placing of the details.

For example, look at the positioning of your (what I call) rhino horns on Kennedy's nose. These can be further up or further down the length of his nose and there also is a double clash known. Here are a few. Note the arrows in the first and second picture point to the same design element lower or higher on the nose in the different pictures. The 1st picture appears to be a triple clash that occurred before the prior two clashes were polished off!
