1883 GSA Morgan cc curious about what grade

#1 Unread post by tomsch88 »

Curious about what grade this 1883 gsa morgan cc might get? I know most are in the MS63 range, but I'm not sure for this one...I hope the picture is good enough to make estimates.

Thanks in advance!

We don't grade coins except to say it appears to be MS, no one can tell you a grade based on images alone. I will say most of the GSA are MS63 or less.

Welcome!

I inherited 8 just like that - a mix of 1882, 1883 & 1884. I've wondered the same thing.

A related question: is it true that PCGS or NGC will grade these GSA coins in their original holders? So no need to break them out, if someone decided to submit for grading?

Not sure if asking a related question in someone else's post is against policy. If so, I apologize in advance...

Best,
Jeff

A coin broken out of a company slab and resubmitted to that same grading company is never guaranteed the same grade again!

Appreciate the feedback and warm welcomes! I think I know the answer to Jeff's question above:
A related question: is it true that PCGS or NGC will grade these GSA coins in their original holders? So no need to break them out, if someone decided to submit for grading?

NGC and ANACS grade these GSA coins and provide a "ribbon" around original GSA holder. PCGS will encapsulate the original GSA holder in their own larger holder (all we need now is for CAC to provide another capsule to contain all others inside to complete the redundancy ;>)

Sorry, I'm a bit salty about "official" companies grading the graders.

No apologies necessary. Admittedly I was around when the grading companies started and most people were not impressed! The startup was viewed as a bunch of people with the audacity to call themselves THE experts over everyone else with just as much experience. As for most of the rest of the world, the companies were seen as just something else Americans were willing to pay for which they could do for themselves. Slabbing took a long time to catch on in other countries b/c of this.

It was the internet and eBay selling so many slabs (exposure to the masses) that grew their business tremendously - with a lot of the business coming from the masses who just assumed something professional looking was, indeed, THE last word in coins.

Too many people do not know enough to buy the coin and not the slab, therefore the company reputations with the masses have grown well beyond what their products and claims merit. Proof can be found in the essay (linked in my signature) which uses PCGS's own (linked) data to shows a rookie level of incompetence in just one area that has cost collectors who have gone with the crowd and not done their homework thousands of dollars.

When the companies started, we used to joke that someday people would find a way to market grading the graders but "knew" (and this is NOT slam...it is just a factual record of what we used to say) no one would be stupid enough to fall for it.

A few years ago the MACAC company started up that was going to evaluate CAC stickered slabs...so I had some fun predicting the future:
