New pickup from Heritage Auctions :)

#1 Unread post by Gam3rBlake »

So about 2 weeks ago Heritage Auctions had a HUGE selection of Ancient coins from all over the world and obviously I had to check it out.

I was hoping to pickup a Roman gold aureus but sadly I was quickly outbid :(.

But later in the auction I came across this MS Athenian Tetradrachm and managed to win it!

Now it’s the oldest coin in my collection.

440-404 BC is insanely long ago so it blows my mind that it’s still in MS condition WITH original mint luster!

How in the world could original mint luster survive all this time? I am not an specialist on ancients so don't know theories concerning this.

Usually because they were buried in an environment that kept them safe from tarnishing & toning.

Pretty rare all things considered but it does happen.

There was a story not long ago about 300 tetradrachm found in a stone casket underneath the site of a long demolished temple. It was an offering to the God(s) of that temple made when it was built.

Yeah it’s tough for grading companies like NGC to say for sure when it was so long ago and there were so many little variations.

That makes sense. Simply amazing! I guess a lack of humid environment would be essential as well. Definitely an important, beautiful, and historic treasure you have there.

Yup! As far as I’m concerned coins like this are historical artifacts and our job as collectors is to keep them safe for future generations.

It would be such a shame if a coin that survived for 2,400+ years was lost/damaged on my watch.

Think of all the wars, famines, plagues etc., that these coins have survived without being melted down. It’s crazy!

For this very reason I could never own one this nice. Despite my best efforts I always find one or two of my coins I had stored "properly" (even with desiccant) having some deterioration. My latest was a 2010 S Proof Kennedy silver. I had given it an acetone bath before storing in a new 2X2 from a stack. I used plastic tongs to put it into the new 2X2. Two years later I looked at it (along with many others I treated the same), and it had black on an area of the edge like there was a hole in the 2X2. I use AirTite capsules now with better coins.

Well you could always buy ancient coins that are already in slabs :). Then you wouldn’t have to worry about deterioration.

Yikes! I never use acetone or any chemicals on coins with numismatic value.

However I have used acetone & dipped things like circulated Peace Dollars.

But with numismatically valuable coins I don’t even use water let alone chemicals.

...but slabs are not airtight. Coins can, and do, deteriorate in slabs. In fact some unscrupulous sellers on ebay buy slabbed coins and artificially tone them, trying to make a larger profit, by putting the slab in a container with a source of sulfur.

I am a former high school Chemistry teacher.

Acetone is perfectly safe for coins (and people - as Dr.s well know - an overdose is treated by waiting for it to clear itself out of your system!). It will remove many surface contaminants and cannot chemically alter/change/dissolve/discolor/french fry/chocolate coat etc. your coin 😊

All acetone will completely evaporate off of the surface once the coin is removed from the bath. Room temperature is too hot for acetone to remain in liquid form...which is why it feels cold to the touch...its evaporating as you touch it.

I have used it on many hundreds of coins for over 11 years with absolutely no side effects, and again, its b/c the acetone is not there. It did its job and evaporated totally off of the coin when removed form the bath.

Note it must be from a bottle labeled as pure acetone.
