Conflicting Data

#1 Unread post by DSCoins »

Not to long ago I asked a question about a coin I read about on the CONECA web site. I asked if any body knew about the 2017 P which the gentleman referred to a reverse far and reverse close. What brings this up again is an article in my latest issue of ErrorScope about the coin. At the time I was informed the the close reverse was from a misaligned die. At that time I accepted the answer of misaligned die. Between then and now I have furthered my knowledge on this matter. No not on the coin its self, but other factors which have steered me away from the misaligned die or at least I think I have. The answer of a misaligned die would have been my fist guess also and that is why I accepted it. Now given that, the Reverse Die for the cent is the anvil die. It is possible for it to be misaligned, but it is very uncommon. The reason it is as I understand it, is that the collar goes around the neck of the anvil die, thusly holding the die in place. To be honest about all of this, I still do not understand how then this came about unless it is one of the very uncommon Anvil Die misalignments.

Okay, so I went back and dug out that V30 #5 issue, ..... page 16 "Discovery Coin or No Big Deal"… Looking at the images, it's clear the top coin,
the "Near Shield", looks off-center.

I wasn't able to find anything regarding this coin in the most recent issue
Volume 30 Number 5.

Was there any information that you could dig up, regarding a "Reverse in Hammer" position for this cent?

No particular article. Mike Diamond talks about the Anvil die and the hammer die quite often in Coin World.
