Post-coin shortage oldies

#1 Unread post by JTCC »

I was a coin roll hunter, and I noticed that after this coin circulation issue ( aka coin shortage ) more older wheat cents has resurfaced. as a example, in January 2021, I purchased $100 worth of pennies from a local wells fargo branch, and ended up with a couple 30's wheaties, and your regular ol' 40's and 50's. but this Monday, after months without anything in their vaults, the same wells branch has $50 of pennies available to me, which i happily bought, in the first box, to my rejoice, i uncovered a 1914 P and a 1916 P, and some more common wheats, ( 8 in total ) the second box produced a 1918 P, 1919 P, 1925 S and a 1937 S, with other common wheats ( 10 in total! ) I was surprised by this result, but I ain't complaining! so, any thoughts on this abnormal occurrence?

I have also noted that there are a lot more wheat cents in the boxes I have been getting. Before this "flue" took hold I was averaging about 6-10 wheat cent per box. Since the middle of July, I have averaged 15-20 wheat cents per box. Keep in mind I go through 2 boxes a week. I have managed to find a 1909, 1913, 1920, 1926, Some in the 30's and of course 40s, 50's. Even though I do not keep them I find enough 60s to make two complete sets of them each box (1960-1969).

I as well have noticed more older coins in my rolls and change. I believe what happened was they announced a "coin shortage", which wasn't true. But I think people took their coin jars etc. to the banks and now we have more older coins in circulation. My opinion anyways.

Keep in mind, many organizations were paying a minor premium for your coinage, ...
slightly more than face value to induce the hoarders
