1964 Jefferson Nickel

#1 Unread post by hastic1 »

I have a 1964 Jefferson nickel that is part of a US Mint (Philadelphia) set that I am going to submit for grading. My question is this nickel considered a regular strike coin vs a proof coin? I know the mint identifies proof coins now on their packaging but was not sure about the terminology used in the 60's. Thanks for any guidance.

Well , I would like to see Pics. Why do you want to grade it ? The grading fee out values the coin . Thanks for posting .

If the coin is considered a proof, then I would not cut it out of the cellophane packaging to be graded. From what I see the coin has no chatter marks, has FS, beautiful all over but if it is proof you would expect that. Looking at PCGS listings, a MS67 would have pretty good $ value but sure this is for a regular strike not for a cherry picking proof coin. The package is a 5 coin set which has the US Mint (blue/silver logo) emblem that came in a tan envelop from Treasury Department. At this stage, I am pretty much talking myself that this is how proof coins were packaged up to 1964 then in 1965 Treasury Dept started the SS series from 65-67. This was wishful thinking initially on my part but now after thinking about it, these are proof coins.

PCGS and NGC will grade it as a Proof coin - But I agree with Sal that unless - like you said - it comes in as a High MS - you won't get the grading cost back - here are some of the HIGHER recent sales on eBay

Hope this helps.

Agree, not worth it as a proof grade. Thanks for the response.

It still seem crazy to me that anybody would pay 1000 times more for a lower grade circulation strike (MS67 FS), than a higher graded proof with basically perfect steps.

Use a price guide to see if a coin is worth grading. Also you should know what the difference is in a proof set and a mint set. A 1964 nickel is common and don't get mixed up into thinking it's an SMS either.
