Cull Barber Quarters?

#1 Unread post by muswell65 »

Continuing through my Dad's collection...

Found a separate envelope with what he must have considered "cull" Barber quarters:

There are several other tubes with higher grade Barbers, which is why I assume he set these specifically aside based on their grade.

Similar envelope full of Seated Liberty, Barber and Mercury dimes - same condition. Also backed-up with higher grade tubes of similar coins.

Other than searching for key dates, what to do with such coins? Melt at best?

I understand there isn't a single "correct" answer. Just curious about the perspective of other collectors/dealers. Unfortunately, I can't ask this particular collector :(

Still new to the forum. Thanks for all that you do. The expertise you share and patience you exercise is commendable...

Kindly,
Jeff

Hey Jeff . I wish I had an answer but it's your choice if you want to melt or possibly look for Key errors . Most of those coins are toast . It depends how sentimental the coins are to you I guess.
Good Luck, keep posting and happy collecting .

I personally hate to see any dated coin this old melted. They just represent too much history. There are plenty of newbie collectors (and maybe others) who don't have any examples of Barbers. Instead of melt, maybe out them on eBay. I am told eBay selling prices for silver go for more than melt anyway.
Recently I did have 3 or 4 Barbers that went in with a gripe for melt. They were non-dated and slick. No way to know the dates, so to me it was not hard to do. I have a full roll of SLQs with no date I likely will eventually let go for melt as well to finance something better that I want.

Thanks, Earle. That's the personal perspective I was looking for, like Sal's.

Because they were my Dad's, I don't think I could commit them to melt. So I was looking for feedback from other collectors about why he might have held on to them? He clearly separated them from others, but they were still around. Perhaps this was later in his collecting journey, and he appreciated that someone just starting out might still want them? Unfortunately I can't ask him, so thanks for your input :)

Best,
Jeff
