New Member - 1909-S Indian Head Cent Question
Greetings, COIN Help U Community,
As stated in the subject, I've just recently joined, and after finding Daniel's website through my searches, decided to join. The information shared here is truly helpful!
I recently inherited a huge coin collection from my father, and am going through it and trying to better understand exactly what I have.
Going through many tubes of Indian Head cents, I was initially excited to find a 1909-S. However, after closer inspection, noticed that it was damaged. It seems to have been stamped or punched with something on the reverse, which is also visible on the observe. Coin does not lie completely flat. I've attached images - not sure how well the damage can be seen.
So my question is - does this damage render the coin worthless?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Jeff

Nice coin despite damage; still has some value and would most definately sell if you were to ebay it for a reasonable price. After all, all of the coin shops and roll makers need S mint IHP's

Re: New Member - 1909-S Indian Head Cent Question
Thanks, MonsterBug - wasn't sure what to make of it once I noticed the damage.
Unfortunately, I don't know the back-story of how the coin was acquired. My Dad put his collection together mostly as a kid through his mid-20s, before his own kids came along (he was born in 1937). I knew of the collection, but never went through it with him. I've been blown away by how many coins there...

Re: New Member - 1909-S Indian Head Cent Question
Hey, M welcome. Two things I hate, to see a nice coin like this that was damaged or a cleaned coin, makes my OCD come out. I think you should buy a generic plastic holder and make a nice little label, "Dads Indian Head", or something of that nature, the damage will limit the value severely. Just to give you and idea of value a low AU is worth about 22 bucks, and this would be a non damaged coin, so you kind of get the idea. If it were an 1888 P 8/7 in MS 64, well then I would say, Heritage and either buy yourself a new Bass Boat, or a down payment on a New Panamera.

A Normal 1909-S IHC for 22.00? Please CoinMule, tell me where you buy your coins :)Just to give you and idea of value a low AU is worth about 22 bucks, and this would be a non damaged coin
This is one IHC I need for the set.
I see XF sold eBay at $446.00 & Au in slabs are no less than 600+.

A final comment in my "New Member" introductory post:
I'm sure you have all seen this in your coin collecting pasts, but I'll post pictures of how this collection was stored by my Dad when I get a chance. Here is just one example:
It's a combination of old cigar boxes, canvas bank bags and other nondescript storage. I found 30+ pounds of silver coinage in a WWII M1 ammo box. A mix of $5, $10 & $20 gold coins were carefully stored in a paper clip box. You can't make this stuff up...
Thanks for all that you do here!

Thanks, MonsterBug. I hope to pick up where my Dad left off at some point, just a steep learning curve and sooo many coins to go through. Just wish I was retired ;)

Re: New Member - 1909-S Indian Head Cent Question
Congratulations on these! If only all of our fathers had done this! My one grandfather did. But the box he put them in never showed up. He had no idea what happened to them. And if only I had had the smarts as a kid to buy one of each when they were a LOT more affordable.A mix of $5, $10 & $20 gold coins were carefully stored in a paper clip box.

Re: New Member - 1909-S Indian Head Cent Question
I had to share these pictures. Here's the paper clip box I picked up and thought "paper clips don't weigh this much":
Then I opened the box:
Cracks me up :)
I put the coins in the flips. Each was carefully wrapped in some cotton material when I originally opened the box.
Apologies if I'm not using the forum as intended, i.e. too much personal commentary about my journey through this collection. @Daniel - PM me if so...
