1876 S and 1877 S trade dollars

#1 Unread post by AbMa »

Hello coincommunity,
Can you help me with these 2 trade dollars. The 1876 S is 100% fake, I think, because the weight is 23,44 gram. But are there any details next to weight that stand out and you can say that it is fake? I mean visually.

For the 1877 S, I am not sure if it is fake or not, the weight is 27,18 gram so it seems ok to me. Are there any details that can say that it is fake? Visually of course.

Thanks in advance!

Hello , Welcome ! I'be helping you tonight . I see the 1st one being a counterfeit probably from China .That's why I only buy Graded Trade Dollars from reputable seller . Even then they do counterfeit slabs also. that's another matter. Test the magnetism of the coin ? Check size of coin ?
I believe the 2nd one is correct . Weight is a tad off but within the .097 g allowance .

Both dollars are not magnetic and the size seems also ok. I also bought from a reputable seller but I think he overlooked this one. I was just wondering if there are any details beside weight, magnetism and size that are visible that indicate that the coin(s) are fake.
Thanks for your comment and time😉

Sal,
What are you seeing that makes you believe the 1st coin is a fake?
And how have you determined that it is from China?

I would send said coins to ANACS, very cost effective grading fees and shipping.
