Environmental damage?

#1 Unread post by AlansCoins »

I just bought a high grade, brown Indian Head cent - at least online it was all brown. When it arrived, much to my dismay I saw many small, rusty orange colored spots on the obverse. I don't know if this is the last of the original red or the start of environmental damage. I am especially concerned about two spots in the attached pictures. The spot in the "Indian - field" picture is in the field between the "E" and the headband. The spot in the "Indian - neck" picture is on the neck at the bottom center (my apologies for needing something to draw arrows).

I hope someone can help. Thanks much,
Alan

Thanks for the full coin images.....
Remember that when you are snapping images of coins, you should always remove them from their containers, and picture them "Raw" if possible.

Also keep in mind, that when you are purchasing a coin "Online", you are in essence, purchasing an image, so to say. You have to realize that almost all of the images that you see of coins online, have altered or enhanced photographic properties....... that's just the way it is today.

Your reddish orange blotchy patches are most likely minor 'Oxidation Issues'.
Looking extremely close, you may find some very small/tiny corrosion spots. They will be difficult to identify when they are very tiny, if the coin is still within its flip.
