1884 Indian Head missing details and denticles.

#1 Unread post by PetesPockets55 » Wed Feb 27, 2019 11:08 pm

I'm hoping to get some clarification on this 1884 Indian head cent. I received it in a roll of wheats and originally was trying to determine an approximate grade. Not any more though.
I noticed the bust was weak with weak interior details as well.
On the reverse I noticed a fairly strong strike to the profile of the wreath, bow and shield but the interior details were very weak.

And then I noticed the denticles or rather a lack of them even though there was plenty of depth at the rim.

If this is true why is there no definition and separation to the denticles of this coin. Only the slightest ridges evident below the date.

I'm leaning towards this being a contemporary counterfeit, made from a two sided mold instead of being sand cast.
A couple of questions:
--Is the pitting on cast counterfeits from the sand or bubbles forming in the metal itself or both.
--Is the gap between the denticles supposed to be even with the field of the coin?
--Is this just a well worn coin with abnormal denticles?
--Were molds used for counterfeit coins as well as sand casting?

Thanks for looking and helping me to understand these coins with missing denticles.

The coin is a normal and worn Indian Head Cent, this is how they wear down and I see many of these. You can find several at ebay now https://ebay.to/2H9KQFB

Thanks Daniel.
I saw a lot of those but am still trying to wrap my head around how the denticles wouldn't show separation or the tips on an authentic coin.

I have to agree with Daniel here.
I can see trace denticles under the date on the obverse.

Thanks guys.
Just trying to understand where the gaps between the denticles disappear to.

The gaps are still there but the actual denticles have been worn down so they're the same height not as the gaps.
