4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). TPG service Details for damage
I am looking for past experience/opinion on TPG grading in terms of Environmental damage and stains on a coin. I realize there are different kinds of environmental damage depending on what the coin has been exposed to and without seeing a coin in person this can be a difficult question to to answer, but do some TPG view this detail differently? I have seen many on Ebay (and a few other sites) that are slabbed that appear to have a similar stain, in size and color, that one service notes as damage where another gives a straight grade. I know wisdom says to buy the coin, not the slab. Also, to buy what you like so there is no regret, but it just seems that this detail in TPG is way more subjective than a difference in a straight grade. Thanks for any opinion/advice.

The bare facts are no grading service uses anything at all that is a legitimate and verifiable standard. They are totally unaccountable (this includes what is often called the PCGS guarantee b/c except for if they grade a fake coin as real, it only serves as a way PCGS comes out ahead).
They are inconsistent in many things b/c of the business model they use. Most people do not want to hear this b/c they have already invested a lot of money into one company or the other. The companies understand people "need" an "expert" opinion and so this is what they have capitalized on to make their businesses work.
It's a bit like wondering why a carpenter who chooses not to use a legitimate tape measure might do better work on making door frames or window frames.

I'm with Earle on this one. These companies aren't even individually consistent. Let alone compared to each other. One day they might spot a green speck on a nickel and call it corrosion, the next day they might slab it MS-67. One day the toning is "questionable/artificial" and the next it's passable.
I don't believe that every grader is an exert on everything that they grade 100% of the time. There's inconsistencies and mistakes, and mix-ups all the time on almost every issue.
My advice for wanting to slab your own coins when you aren't interested in immediately selling, is to do your research on each coin your considering and really know the ins & outs about why you want it in the holder. For example, if you don't know how to spot cleaning, learn about that. Then see if it affects your decision to send anything off. There's no sense in spending money on disappointment, so be picky and really choose coins that you think are prime candidates. Then, pick whatever slab you like the look of. (Some companies require expensive memberships)
Don't be scared to sit on coins. I've been buying nice raw coins for years now, waiting to grade them. Only problem is that I don't really like any of the options. The coins aren't getting any worse the way I store them. So I can wait a decade until AI grading. Then everyone is gonna want that instead, and I didn't waste hundreds of dollars on the dodgy grading that's out right now.
