I just saw your recent video on proof nickel with low mintage and I have a few questions. Is is better to purchase a proof nickel in slab from PCGS or a proof coin set? I found a PSGS 1997-S Jefferson Nickel * PCGS Graded PR70 * Deep Cameo * for $19. Is this the grade you were speaking about and is this a good price?

A side note first:
Overall coins are not a good investment. Any experienced dealer will tell you this. Over time most coins do not gain in value or bring in a premium to individuals investing in them. While the prices seem to say values are up when comparing old to new prices, the people thinking so are not taking into account the devaluing of the dollar as time goes on.

Example: Sometime in the late 70s I bought my 1950-D nickel to complete my set. it was 9.00 from my local coin shop, which was the typical going price. As with other collectors at the time, we all just expected this key dates low mintage to keep its value rising (or at least keep its value). Today it is worth 1/3 the price I paid.

On the other side of this, current ebay SOLD 1950-D raw nickels are around 15.00. That equates to 3.46 in 1979 dollar value.
I could keep doing this over and over.

What about something like the coveted CC Morgan dollars? For example (I picked the date at random) an 1883 CC in MS64 (according to numismedia.com) is $438.00 which is 101.00 in 1979 dollars. When the hoard was discovered in the 1980s (I still have the flyer), they were being offered at 150.00 each. They have gone down in value.

You can always get a non-rare clad proof coin less expensively by buying it in a proof set. Deep Cameo is a very subjective term and enables more slabs to be sold by putting different ink on the labels. I am not denying some coins are a deep cameo, I am saying there is not a consistency as to what the slab says b/c no measurable standards are used. For example, I found this on ebay in one second of looking. It is not slabbed and sure looks deep cameo in the pics (at least). Price? 1.50.

Now if you just want a slabbed coin b/c you like the slabbed, then this will not suit your desires. But also remember just b/c the ink says its a proof MS70 cameo does not mean it is. The same coin cracked out and resubmitted, even to the same company, is never guaranteed the same grade again. There is nothing verifiable by any standard used in grading coins. That is not to dissuade someone who likes, them, it is just a reality many seem to somehow not understand.

A lot of people lose a lot of money b/c of that. See the PM I sent you concerning what you need to know about the companies so you don't lose money.

I was referring to proofs from 1954 and before, they're low mintage and I wasn't referring to any certain grade. I was not referring to just any proof nickel.

That was a great video.

I would make two suggestions, (1) never buy a coin for **only** an investment, I happen to collect Jeffersons and enjoy them and see the potential if interest becomes more widespread so I am watching them for good buys for those that I don't have already in proof high quality condition, and (2) watch the video again, Daniel is quite specific about the dates that are most interesting from a potential standpoint and really includes the early dates in high quality with a rare exception, and proof sets are generally not the way to go if you really want the Jefferson nickel:

I also enjoyed that video. At the time I answered I had not yet seen it. IN the coin hobby, if you want to make an investment, you have to know a lot more about what the hobby is, does, and values b/c just a key date coin will not necessarily go up in value over time.

My name "Coininvestor" has a greater meaning than just a monetary investment. I am not in this hobby to make money. If anything, I really enjoy the hunt of finding coins that I don't have. I have already made my money and now I am retired. I invest my extra income in the hobby of obtaining knowledge, historical significance of the coin or currency as well as the joy of obtaining a rare monetary instrument. I ask questions to understand the nuances of this hobby.

Daniel, I believe, as you almost said in your video, people don't like to collect Jefferson Nickels.
Now that the Jefferson design has changed (Looking forward), the older nickels might catch some interest.
I personally don't like Jeffersons...
