Hey all! I'm excited to find out that an old building (1850's) that used to be an old one room schoolhouse is now a private residence. My question is simple the answer is not.
Question?? What's the best approach to a successful attempt at securing permission to detect?
It's been literally years that I came into this situation. Most of the property that I've searched was permitted by the State/local parks personnel.
If I do get permission, I plan to donate items to the homeowner if that's their wish. What they don't want I'll keep for my collection.

1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). Re: Getting Permission- What's your approach?
I usually knock on the front door and just ask, usually offer them $20. But some people are weird about that now. Lack of trust within communities and whatnot these days. Another option might be writing out a nice note explaining who you are, and what you do, and why you're interested in metal detecting there. With your number attached at the bottom saying "please let me know yes/no if it would be alright." Just rubber band it it to their door handle. Andrew Jackson usually greases the wheels. Usually people don't even take it, but it entices them to trust you because it shows you're earnest. (These are my tactics for fishing farm ponds, not metal detecting, but I'd imagine it would pan out in a similar way)
