Pile of melted coins found
I've metal detected for over 30 years.I'm currently using the Minelab Manticore,,great machine but has a learning curve that takes about 40 hours.
A couple weeks ago I was detecting an old homestead and pulled out a clump of melted coins.
Will have to test for silver,,,not about the value but an interesting find.Thought I'd share.

That's a cool and unique find. What area are you from? I doubt any of them can be saved now, unfortunately.
Keep us posted on your findings. Thanks!

Re: Pile of melted coins found
Thanks. I'm in Cambria County PA.
Sadly they are beyond saving ,,,but I'll probably keep them anyhow as a reminder of the hunt.
I have a permission at the end of July where a late 1700-1800s schoolhouse stood. Hoping it hasn't been gone over and turns up something good.

Well they would look great to preserve in this state, and put under glass as a conversation piece.

Re: Pile of melted coins found
Hi,Thanks. It is a curious find. There were shards of pottery and old glass in the hole.
I "think" they had them in a coin jar in the house and a fire somehow broke out.
I also recovered two silver dimes from the same area,,,nothing valuable.

Re: Pile of melted coins found
You're Welcome! I had the chance of detecting an old Schoolhouse here in Connecticut and found a nice 1847 Large Cent. If it's that old there might be a "root cellar". Check around the foundation real good by going slow with a small coil. Or away in a nice flat area where the kids might have congregated. Good luck and share Pics from the hunt, if you find coins!Cndgmn wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2023 9:19 pm Thanks. I'm in Cambria County PA.

Re: Pile of melted coins found
Sniper coils are great in iron infested sites, even if you sacrifice a little depth.
I also like to cover an area in different recovery speeds.I'll go over an area in 4-5 then go over it again in 7-8.
I've managed to pull stuff from sites with the Manticore that have been pounded by the Equinox 800, running ferrous limits of 8upper-2lower,24 sens in General.
Love cellar holes,,,,when they aren't overgrown with greenbriar.
Thanks again.I'll be sure to share anything of note.

Just watch out for Ticks! Had Lyme disease before and it almost didn't work out. Got real sick.
