1995 D Kennedy half dollar-unusual surface

#1 Unread post by Livie »

The surface of this half dollar is unusual. I have looked for similiar looking coins/errors but haven’t been able to find anything. It is not damage. It has little wear aside from the “swirl” marks (I assume happened in a counter?). For lack of a better description, the surface looks like choppy water. Can you tell me what causes this?

It is damage, actually. It's caused by being submerged in caustic acid.

Otherwise completely normal coin, a spender.

It looks normal to me but should I take a photo of it from the side? If so, how do i post another image here?

Here are a few more images. It’s a bit thin and weighs approx 11.2g if that helps at all.

Thanks for the extra Pics. :D
The weight is within tolerance for the year. Like Daniel said in his video, a caustic substance has altered the surface.

Hey Sal, I can see how you came to acid damage. That was one of my thoughts and you’re probably 100% correct. I am still a little unsure but only because the coin surface has a beautiful sheen; it is not dull at all which, unfortunately, is hard to capture in a photo. There aren’t pockmarks or larger eroded areas. The copper layer is shiny, and not discolored, flattened, or sunken in. Any additional thoughts or is acid damage your final answer? ;)

The surface doesn't have to be dull if acid was used, the coin could have had many things happen to it, but none of this happened during the coin minting process and that's what matters the most.

There is nothing in the minting process that can make a circulation strike coin look like this. Therefore it has to be post mint. And sicne the surface is altered, it is categorized as post mint damage.

Even things that might make a coin look "nicer," such as gold plating a coin, selectively gold plating, painting, or polishing, all things that alter the surface like that are post mint damage.
