1988 D Penny - Wide AM - pic quality and questions
Hi all,
I have posted a few times requesting feedback on my pics and answering some basic questions - thank you for all your help and advice.
1) How are the pics?
- Bigger, smaller, better cropped (circle instead square)
- I did not use any effects on the pics besides:
- Rotating, cropping, and resizing by 50%
2) I am pretty sure this is the Wide AM variety we want to find - am I correct?
3) Anyway to clean the coin without "cleaning" the coin?
Thank you,
Dan

Re: 1988 D Penny - Wide AM - pic quality and questions
The 1988 D was minted with the RDV-005 reverse which is a wide AM, how ever some were struck with the RDV-006 which is also a wide AM but the designers initials are different. They are very rare and it has do with the initials. See links below. And in the picture you will notice on the RVD-006(rare one) the "G" in the initial is flared on the bottom. Your pictures are good but cant zoom in enough to make out the initials. This is called a transitional design variety were a design designated for the upcoming year somehow makes on a coin before it is suppose to. I hope this helps.

Re: 1988 D Penny - Wide AM - pic quality and questions
The years shown in blue, red and pink are the rarer ones all the other ones are normal. The only years for the RDV-006 is the 1988 Philly and the 1988 Denver.

Well glad to see I don't have to keep 89's now... but now have to go back through my 80's coinage. And now know to keep a tighter eye out for the correct years.. thanks everyone. I learned something here.

Here is a close pic of the initials - hopefully you can make something out.

Still blurry the best thing to do is to look at the initials with a 10x loupe and compare it to the link and pictures I provided above. You will be able to tell right away.

Re: 1988 D Penny - Wide AM - pic quality and questions
Ugh bummer - I zoomed in and it appears that the initials were damaged/crushed, but would love to get a definitive answer. Thank you for all the help and information you provided - I really appreciate it.

There would be no way of knowing with damaged initials. They are rare I have searched so many rolls and have not found one yet. Just keep looking.
