Cleaned 1952-D Washington Quarter?

#1 Unread post by DDietz »

Hello, everyone. My first post here, so if I'm doing something wrong, please go easy on me.

The obverse of this coin looks great until you put it under the loupe and examine the area between "IGWT" and Washington's neck, and to the right of Washington's braided hair. To me, these look like scratches, but I'm fairly new and inexperienced when it comes to spotting cleaning. I believe these are scratches, not flow lines, but can those of you with a more experienced eye confirm, maybe give your impression of what was done? Thanks!

Welcome

Very possible die polishing lines...............?

I would need a different type of imaging to confirm this.

Apologies, I'll get the reverse image up as quickly as I can get a good shot.

Here is the reverse, and an additional photo, where the lines to the right are visible from another perspective, and to the left, the lines now appear as a discolored blemish.

Thanks!

Since you have the coin in hand, and these are difficult to image, do the lines look like this?

Hi Paul,

Yes, the lines look very much like the ones in the image A and since I didn't know what die polish lines were until you suggested it as a possibility, I looked it up and watched some videos. These lines stop at the device as if traveling under, it so I'm beginning to think they are DPL, as you suggested. Thanks for the education.

There you go. You taught something else. I was being lazy and figured I could get away with using it for die polish lines....

The are polish lines from the die. I see these on coins all the time.
