Unusual 1926 Swiss 2 Franc coin--help identifying
Hello! I want to thank you in advance for any help you can offer. I have come across a 1926 Swiss 2 franc coin that is very different than what I am used to. It is tiny, about 13mm across and weighs 0.65g. If I had to guess, it is made out of zinc or steel. It is definitely not silver or copper. My gut feeling is that it is some sort of novelty item, and not a real coin. I am curious how it originated, though. I have put it next to a normal Swiss 2 Franc coin for comparison. Thank you!

Period play money? A total guess with nothing to back it up.

That thought had crossed my mind. If it is play money from the 20's, that is still interesting...
Thanks for the replies so far.

@JTCC
Personally I think this is a great find! I don't recall ever seeing play money from another country before.

Europe was facing severe hardships in the 1920s, compared to the USA absolutely booming economically. And many countries had to find ways to produce coins as inexpensive as possible, and that is probably why the play money existed in Switzerland back then.

When I mentioned play money I was referring to replica coins kids use for toy money (even today). So are you the Swiss used toy coins as legit currency back then? I have heard of the Germans issuing Notgeldt, but know nothing about coins in Swiss history....And many countries had to find ways to produce coins as inexpensive as possible, and that is probably why the play money existed in Switzerland back then.

No, but they were in a severe economic crisis, and had to produce money as cheaply as possible so they won't go into debt.Earle42 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 19, 2022 11:34 pmWhen I mentioned play money I was referring to replica coins kids use for toy money (even today). Sometimes, you got to do what you got to do to survive hard times, and use unconventional and unique methods to do so.

It is pretty cool, I'll be holding on to it. With a bit more research after that other link, I found it is called "Kinderspielgeld"--literally "children's play money."
