1c-2022-D Learning to grade

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

So I cracked open one of my uncirculated 2022-D cent boxes to practice grading. And specifically grading MS/uncirculated coins.

A couple of questions I have:

What are the "liver spot" looking things and do they affect the grading? They look like dark spotty stains like someone dropped coffee on the coins in small tiny drops. Or dried rain drops.

Also, what about the scratches? Not the big scratches. Particularly around the upper hair/head, temple, and lower bust you can see tiny scratches almost like bag marks but I know those are something else and it's a bit of a misnomer.

Those questions aside as I don't know how those two things affect grading I would say it's an MS60 or MS61. Weakly struck, more than a few moderate/large scratches. Oddly the larger scratches are harder to see on camera as they show more on angles to the light.
