1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. 1963 Roosevelt Dime Possible Planchet Error
Greetings,
I am not one who usually searches my change for mint errors. I mainly stack silver coins. However, I came across this coin mixed in with a recent purchase of 90% silver coins. It is a 1963 Roosevelt dime with a hole and a crack running through the coin. The anomaly appears on both the obverse and reverse. At first I figured it was just damaged and moved on, however, I stumbled across defective planchet errors while shopping for more coins. Could this be a planchet error or is it just damaged? Thank you for your time and all you do for the numismatic community.

Someone likely smashed a nail through it and eventually pulled it out.
A huge shame for a nice Silver Dime

Welcome
These are almost impossible to attribute with an online image.....
They really need to be seen "In Hand"
I recommend that you research "Blowholes".

I agree with Paul - the pictures make it look like a blowhole.

I agree with Paul, appears to be a blowhole. Gas can get trapped in the layers and expand.

Just trying to save you some cash...if you get the notion to get it slabbed to sell it, check the sold price on heritage for similar ones and then make sure to do the homework about how much it will cost to slab. Way too many people do not research, the grading companies get paid a wad, and the owner ends up in the hole and upset.

Thank you for the heads up. Based on Heritage auctions, it would be a toss of the dice if I make money or not. If I do decide to get it slabbed, it would be for conformation it is an error and for my own personal collection. I don’t plan on selling anything unless I encounter a financial hardship.

I do not believe I am going out of bounds here to say you already have profesional confirmation.it would be for conformation it is an error
If the slab itself is not important to you and you just want extra confirmation, our member Paul looks at coins for our members here and saves them the high slabbing fees. See his avatar for his credentials.
If you read the essay in my signature, you will see why I would trust Paul and Daniel's opinions over any grading company anyway. Grading companies GRADE coins and have a terrible track record for identifying errors (though yours is pretty obvious!). Most of the company graders will not have near the experience these two gentlemen do - especially since company graders are trained to GRADE as the primary function.
