10C-2011-D Toning or PMD?

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

I am hoping it's the former as toned coins are starting to grow on me a bit. But wanted to see what the gurus thought. If it's PMD what would cause it? It has much more glare, rainbow effects IRL but couldn't get that to come through on the photos.

Environmental staining/toning. Remember toning is just a fancy way of saying the metal is deteriorating/tarnishing. The marketers found if they called it toning it would sell. Some can be very beautiful, but if not stored properly the "toning" will continue - probably darkening and becoming unattractive.

I agree it is either staining or environmental damage

Not sure what you mean. But silver left to the elements, continues to tarnish until black. The word tarnish specifically means to lose luster.

A non lustrous coin can be affected by the elements, and the results would be a stained surface. The staining process is chemical and can continue giving a deeper discoloration.

I thought it was just a funny turn of phrase. Good stuff!
