Wow - personally I would be afraid to have these! I tend to shy away from beautiful luster coins b/c years ago my bad experience with WHitman albums and folders. I thought I had them stored in an air tight manner, but they lost their luster over time in storage.

Although now I am using capsules and feel better about it. So far my coins that have been in capsules for over 10 years are just as good as when I put them in them. So I likely would do this with Red cents like these gems you are showing as well.

Very nice updates!

Although relatively speaking, they are expensive, I use En Cap pages for my better stuff or a collection with some MS examples. All my Kennedy set is MS and its all in those pages. They are 3-ring binder made and molded to hold Air Tight capsules (some generic capsules fit).

I also have given each a dip in acetone and let it dry (takes so little time) before putting it in the capsule. That way I don't get any surprises later from a fingerprint or something foreign I did not see on the coin. Out of all my Kennedy set (including major varieties, proofs, silver proofs, and even all the Daniel Carr overstrikes!) I have had one capsule fail me. I am guessing the coin missed the acetone dip. Many have been like that now for over ten years and are find. If I was going to long term store, I would put a dessicant into a sealed container (like tupperware).

I already use ziplocks (2 each) and use a large syringe+ tool I made to make a vacuum seal in the bags when storing long term. I have had the vacuum in those bags last 5 years (probably longer, but I was opening to cherrypick). I also add a desiccant package to those.

Thinking instead of just using a food vacuum sealer!

Good advices for precautions, Earle!
Another step closer to a complete UNC Lincoln cent set!
Was happy to come across this beauty for $60 today, don’t see those daily.
Only if the round metal disc has a tiny little “s” on it, eh?
nah, I’ll quit daydreamin’.
(Actually, if everything works out, I just might have a 21-S in red coming my way, at a price that I can’t say no to. we’ll see, we’ll see.)

The Chinese can make one up for you. Either that or a Hobo NIckel carver could probably put one there for you.

Nice high AU with some hints of original red mint luster! :D

Very nice addition. I often think about how nice it would be to be able to go back in time and obtain a brand new roll of each type of coin from the bank just to see how amazing they would look (since we are so used to seeing them in worn condition). Just one specimen in a condition like yours is great, but the sight of a whole roll of them? Wow!

Yeak, I know, being able to keep them would be amazing, but just seeing them would also be amazing.

Tell you what...I'll dream more. Let's make that Denver bank in 1916 :D

Got a few upgrades for the book recently! :D
The 16-D got an unfortunate spot of corrosion on the reverse, but overall still a nice AU. Can’t complain for $25.

What are you storing these in?

Worthy of an EnCap type storage to keep them pristine over time.

I agree. Dansco albums look great! I wish there was an album like those but that used a matte finish tan plastic for the main body of the album instead of cardboard. But making pages like that to allow sliding covers would, no doubt, be cost prohibitive.

But over time your pennies will likely be losing the luster that makes them so beautiful b/c the cardboard is a humidity absorber. :(

Sometimes it happens faster than you would suspect (speaking from experience!).

Beautiful coin!

You know there is now one of these on Mars?

Can you imagine when Mr. Musk finally gets to Mars and brings this penny back how much he will get for it on ebay?

I also started with a wheat cent album after I found a 1918-S in my change and noticed the date. I proceeded to thoroughly clean it using the eraser of a number 2 pencil. There was no internet then and I had no idea that coin shops or coin shows existed. All I knew of coin collecting were the Whitman folders in a local hobby store. Most of these coins came from my change and looking through friends and relatives penny jars. I did have great success at coin roll hunting until an unpleasant teller at the bank told me they would no longer exchange my $2 worth of penny rolls anymore. I was going in about once a week for a couple months. Years later after I discovered a local once a year coin show I filled in the remaining 8 or 10 holes and even upgraded a few coins. I stopped at the 14D and S VDB.

Welcome to the community!
pictures of the said coins please.
Whoops!

Please do NOT put them in this already dedicated thread - that would be hijacking. Make your own new post. Please read the guidelines b/c only allow one coin per thread and need specific pictures in order to give the best answers:

Coins age b/c the air around them has himidity and other small traces of chemicals in it that react with the metal of the coin.

Once that initial mint luster is gone, it never can be replaced b/c the actual metal of the coin has been altered. Polishing or cleaning a coin does NOT make it look like a brand new coin fomr the mint, but instead give it an artificial shine that collectors can easily tell. Cleaning them, therefore, also ruins the coin's value.

Albums are a terrible way to store coins if you are in an area where there is humidity and you want to retain the original look from the mint. Ttypical folders and albums have cardboard in contact with the coins. Cardboard can absorb humidity and therefore the coins in the album start to tarnish. Although to make tarnished coins marketable, people use a nicer sounding term of "toned coins."

The cheapest way to retain original luster is to put each penny it ints own 2X2 holder. The plastic windows of these hold the coin between them and make it very difficult for air to circulate over them. The next step up is to use coin capsules.

Despite the method of keeping each coin, if you want to do the best to keep out humidity, store your coins (i whichever way you choose to hold each coin) in a closed container (even a zip lock bag that has had the air pretty much taken out of it works) with a silica gel packet.
