1915-D Lincoln, conservation - We BOIL at DAWN!!

#1 Unread post by Matthudson »

Again, I must indulge your imagination, as I write this as an afterthought.

I just got this 1915-D Lincoln, meh, VF/XF?

I didn't take "before" pictures, because I never expected THIS! (Next time,I promise!):

You DID notice the hints of original red on the reverse, yes?

Again, immersed in a pot of boiling water and a drop of Dawn liquid for about a minute, or two.

Then into a shallow bowl of acetone. Note the blackened cotton swabs. And, again! No SCRUBBING!!!

Kicks the '15-D presently in my Dansco squarely in the seat of its pants!!!

Not bad for 10 cents from my LCS, huh? (Okay, okay... I paid $6.00 for it. Happy?)

Very nice coin/results!
Isn’t it a coincidence that I just did the same thing on another 15-D using your same method? Turned it from a coin that looks like it was dug out of jimmy’s backyard yesterday into a decent example!

Of course, we're always the hero of our own stories. I came back from coin club this evening and somehow this monster followed me home! The Smithsonian told me to stop calling them and filed a restraining order against me!

Loss: $3.00

This member told me to never bid on his coins again! And he didn't have to say a word in doing so!

I'm taking it back to him next week. I could never sell this corroded common date to someone. Not when they're super easy to come by!

You're supposed to label these accordingly! 1897 IHC F - details, "crappy", or something similar.

Hey! That's great! Oh, yeah... and it doesn't work on every coin, only dirt, not corrosion - often they're hard to tell apart. See my 1898 IHC coin club catch pics. I plead momentary insanity. I like to think I can trust the fellow members of my coin club that I see every two weeks that I can pick up a missing date from a folder and not discover it's a wreck when I get home.

SOLD the 1915-D for $52 today!!

Also, epilogue. Soaking a cent in xylene does practically nothing. BUT, immerse it in near boiling water with a few shavings of Ivory bar soap first, and the gunk slides right off!!

Not yet had the sense to go over all my stored cents yet. I have a bunch. One of these days. Then I will be coming back to find the Hudson Method of penny conservation on the forum. The Lincoln penny set was completed in the 80s...all from circulation. Lacking the extras such as the 55 DDO and the 72 DDO, but all the rest were circulation finds through the 50s by my grandfather. I do remember though i need to upgrde the 14-d. It is a cull.

That turned out very nice. I'm going to use that technique on a number of bad looking old pennies, perhaps they will upgrade to enough quality to go into my wife's (hand me down stuff) book. I can see all the green crud on the cotton swabs.

There is a 14-D on GC for today's auction that is VF details (a couple of not that bad obverse scratches) that has had only 1 bid of $100. There are 2 other VF that are up around $275.

Thanks for this info, but right now I am pursuing other avenues of the collection. I do appreciate your info though :D

After some other primary goals are out of the way I will be visiting the Lincolns.
