"Opium" Trade Dollar
I believe I have what is known as an opium trade dollar. Anyone have experience with these? I am not sure how to open it if it is indeed a box coin. I know Daniel posted a video on these awhile back. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: "Opium" Trade Dollar
Thanks for the information! I have been reading on these but can't seem to figure out how mine opens. I don't want to damage it. Any suggestions?

Re: "Opium" Trade Dollar
I see a definite separation in the outer rim on the reverse....
Do you have any really fine dental instruments?

I don't. I could probably find something but I don't want to damage it any further than it already is. It feels springy at the top of the reverse where the marks are on the T.

This coin was turned into a concealed container for, um, let’s say “substances”.monsterbug1 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 10:08 pm is/was this trade dollar turned into a hollow magicians coin?

Re: "Opium" Trade Dollar
im tired lol. I thought the OP was calling it an "opium" trade dollar becausue it was used to buy opium products in Asia when these were minted, not because it was hollow
Re: "Opium" Trade Dollar
I believe it was made from two different Trade dollars (if it's real). The obverse shows 1878 but the reverse has no mint mark meaning it is from another year. The only non mint mark from 1878 were proofs. Anyone here able to tell if indeed it is made from real trade dollars just by looking at the details? I'm still afraid to try to pry it open in fear of damaging it..but I am very curious to see what is inside.
Thanks!

I was able to open it! Anyone able to authenticate something like this or have any estimate of its value?

This is an amazing piece of history. As to value, I don't know, but if it were mine I would do an internet search including ebay SOLD auctions.

I agree, very interesting. Ebay sold listings should be a good start.
