Surface oxidation of copper plating when exposed to Oxygen/Nitrogen atmospheric (plus other trace elements) conditions or possible contact with other gasses introduced into the coins surrounding environment.

Finger oils from being handled, other contact with chemicals can hinder/speed the process or even cause toning depending on the chemicals being introduced. Heat and cold can also influence the coloring.

OK...so I am a former science teacher with time on my hands :^))
