Hey Mark, welcome to the Internets #1 Destination for coin talk. Your post is great, and we all appreciate you taking the time. It appears you may have something truly unique there. I would suggest, if you can follow Sals' and Pauls' suggestions, and get some different angles on that little honey. Also, if the holder it is in has plastic over it, it might be helpful as far as reflection is concerned, to remove it, "but overall you coin will keaill" (Sorry, watching too much Forged in Fire)

Re: 1945 P Struck On A Damaged Planchet
I'm stumped. Interesting how its easy to see the devices of the date even in the valley areas.
Only a guess: Maybe it was struck through something soft (compressible) enough to allow details to show up from the die into the planchet? I don't think it was struck through something solid like a chunk of metal (feeder finger piece or something else) b/c devices show where the object in the way of the die would not allow the devices to be impressed into the planchet.

Re: 1945 P Struck On A Damaged Planchet
Hey Mark, you may find this interesting. This penny has used "brass", in its composition, some call them “shell case cents”, from military training facilities, so there was no need to add tin because of the content of the cases. Now according to one erudite, the coin composition cannot be detected by sight. So that along with whatever is going on with the front "looks like a legit strikethrough to me", this little guy is pretty cool. I'll give you a buck for it,

Re: 1945 P Struck On A Damaged Planchet
Mark, I am not sure how much you know about coins., so some advice...do not send this in to a grading company b/c they do not offer a service of identifying what an error is. You would be out their fee and not get anything in return.
As you can see in Paul's signature, he is the Wisconson State Rep for C.O.N.E.C.A.: https://conecaonline.org
If you are going to send it anywhere, Paul would be the guy to ID it for you.

Re: 1945 P Struck On A Damaged Planchet
Thank you for the info. I'm not a "error" coin collector, so in the long run I will not keep this one, but I'm wanting to learn what I can about it of course for value when I do sell it, if it has collector value to other's. I will contact Paul directly, but I'm still open to other opinions. I agree that it is struck on used brass from shell casings from after WWII.Earle42 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:30 pm Mark, I am not sure how much you know about coins., so some advice...do not send this in to a grading company b/c they do not offer a service of identifying what an error is. My personal opinion is this coin had a delamination before it was struck, and the strike "smoothed" out the grainy surfaces delaminations are known for, then circulation did the rest.

Re: 1945 P Struck On A Damaged Planchet
Is it possible that in the rolling out of the sheet planchet that something fell into the path of the rollers and made this impression prior to having the coin planchets punched from the sheet? The next supposition would be that the something fell off prior to getting between the dies. I know a little about steel rolling mills, thought that maybe the planchet sheets were rolled in a similar process.
