Honest appraiser

#1 Unread post by Fmd4111 »

Hello I’m Frank from New York , I inherited a silver coin collection that’s been in our family for three generations. I’d like to sell them and have recently been to two different coin appraisers both of whom were a bit arrogant and quick tempered. Can anyone recommend a reputable person that I can trust to not rip me off , thank you in advance for any help

Welcome. If you could post a photo of a few coins (one coin per thread, front and back cropped photos) many knowledgable folks here can help you get started.

Hi Frank, welcome. I will give you 10 bucks for the whole lot, bahahahahahaha, just kidding. First, do not clean or attempt to clean them, most of the time once you do this it generally tanks the value. Next don't touch the obverse or reverse with your fingers, (I use cotton gloves, but this is controversial) only touch the reeded edge. See if you can separate the solid silver from the sandwich type coins, and then look and see if you can tell which have the best looking devices (images on the coins). Then you can post one coin at a time, if you like post them in each corresponding forum. Looking forward to see the coins 😉

The world coins I see are not worth much of anything and without seeing dates and mints then I would use coinflation.com for a base silver price. Although coinflation is melt for uncirculated coins not worn coins. However, some of your coins will sell over melt.
Here's the website https://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html

Looks like from the picture that all the older coins are heavily worn. So unless there is a rare date, they are only worth a little over melt. There are plenty of sites where you can look to see if you have any rare dates. NGC or PCGS have good info online.

Common date barber half dollars can be worth thousands in mint state, but worn out ones are about $10. So the condition is all important.
