Quarter struck on nickel

#1 Unread post by GrowingMass »

Hey coin world!! My name is James I have been coin roll hunting for a couple years now. I have learned a lot about coins, grading coins, errors and a lot about history. I came across a quarter that sounded strange, yes sounded strange and I weighed it and it weighs 4.99-5 grams. I assumed it to be a quarter struck on a nickel planchet. I am looking to get more opinions on this. It has reeded edges. And is the same size a a quarter but not the same thickness. I will try to post pics. Thanks

Hey James ! What you have is a Quarter on a Quarter planchet . It's got die deterioration evident along the edge of the coin with some wear over the last 41 years .

I do not see any evidence in your images that this was struck on a nickel planchet

Ok strange it lost weight as it got older!! Opposite of what happened to me!! 🧐So just through die deteriorating it lost .6 grams? Seems unlikely. Every other coin I weighed from 1965-now none weighed less than 5.6. Yes I jumped to this conclusion because it weighs exactly what a nickel weighs and thinner than it should. The mint mark is almost punched through and dented the coin so it may have been thin to start Maybe it was rolled thin to start and the years. The only reason I caught the weight difference was because it sounded strange like when u have a silver coin and it clinks at a lower tone. I may send it out to get graded I feel like it’s at least rolled thin. More than a half gram is a big difference. To just lose through normal wear and tear. I do appreciate the opinions and respect ✊ them as well. ?Wrong composition? Peace love respect and collect!!

But a nickel is much smaller than a quarter and you can use error-ref.com and heritage sold auctions to see what a quarter struck on a nickel looks like.

Hello James, Ummmm let me see how to do this. OK, lets try this first
So, since nickels don't have a sandwich planchette, well I think you know the answer. Don't forget the metal in the "coil" can vary in thickness, and even though it is supposed to be between x and x, well that number seems to be more of a guideline rather than a rule.
