Re: daniel carr coin share
Trust me...the following summary is worth the read:
1921: James Earl Fraser was commissioned to run the new “Peace” dollar design contest at the mint.
Anthony De Franscisci submitted photographs and large plaster casts of one OBV and two different REV designs to Fraser in New York.
Fraser kept the plasters, made another of each, sent Franscisci to D.C. with them, the designs were accepted (with changes*), and Fraser had bronze casts made of each of the original plasters in NY.
*OBV had Roman numerals changed to normal numbers. “PEACE” afded below the eagle on REV as well as a broken sword being clutched by the eagle.
Fraser sent the orinigal plasters of OBV and REV plus the bronze OBV to Philly, but kept the bronze REV saying it was to rough to work with (reduce). He suggested the Philly mint make a new metal REV copy to work with from the REV plaster he had sent.
Dec. 21, 1921 A Philly mint letter acknwledged receipt of, “the plaster casts of both sides, and bronze castings of the obverse side of the models for the "Peace Dollar.”
...So...
Philly had:
1. Original plaster and Bronze OBV.
2. Fraser had the original bronze REV in NY.
Meanwhile public reaction to media-posted pictures of the new Peace Dollar design was saying the eagle holding a broken sword was a symbol of defeat…not peace. So the mint had the new metal casting made, but changed the sword to an olive branch. This new REV is what was used for reducing and then production.
So what happened to the original bronze REV casting?
2016: a large bronze replica of the original broken sword Peace dollar design shows up on eBay. Daniel Carr happened upon the listing wondering why the large bronze had a broken sword instead of an olive branch.
Research ensued.
The above info was uncovered.
You are reading why the OP has this magnificent coin to post and share with us!
Daniel Carr used (what is almost assuredly) the original bronze casting design of broken sword design to scan and make the back of his broken sword Peace Dollars.
Talk abut a great historical find due to the internet.
Ironic side note: The man working at the mint with the copies was named Mr. Morgan
