1949-D RPM ?

#1 Unread post by claudewill1 »

Hello,
I believe I may have found a 1949-D RPM, however, I am having issues trying to figure out which one it would possibly be if it is. I have gone through doubledie.com and a few other sources looking.

I was wanting to see if anyone might have an idea?

Thank you

I do not detect any repunching/splits in your image number 2....
Possible imaging issue? :dunno

Have you researched this coin for the known die markers?

I've gone through doubledie.com, there are a lot of coins for this year/mint. I guess with this post I was mainly trying to get a hint at what rpm it could possibly be. I guess the possible rpm doesn't show as clearly in a photo. There is a bit of wear from the coin being in circulation. In hand it is a lot easier to see. I just put it in a 2x2 for now. I will do some research on coppercoins.com as well and see if I can find something.

Keep in mind that "Double Dies" and "RPMs" are 2 completely separate variety types

I know there is a difference between double dies and rpms, doubledie.com has sections for both. Also, I am using a Samsung galaxy s8. I have tremors in my hands at times which makes it really difficult for me to hold the phone still. Or any camera that's not on a tripod or something for that matter.

There's probably a lot of varieties I miss since I haven't been searching for DDOs and DDRs and RPMs for the most part. I'm just starting to search for the first two. I probably won't go back through all of the wheat cents I already searched through though, that would take far too long. For being able to look closer up to mint marks and other things I am considering investing in a USB scope, with my vision the way it is, it is difficult just looking through an ordinary loupe for me. I have one of those scopes that Amos sells. However, it doesn't seem to work that well all the time. That is what I have been using to get closer up images.

My eye doctor says I have 2020 vision, but even with the glasses they gave me anyways for reading, I still have issues seeing certain things.

Instead of using a USB Microscope, which seems to draw people in as being the best way to search and to photograph coins unless you can afford one that costs upward of about 1,000 dollars. This is really not true in most cases. To get good photos I personally think that a simple digital camera (not talking about the cameras on phones), does a better job. Along with the digital camera I would also get a small tripod. There are some really good ones for under 20 dollars. Going this route and a good photo editing program (there are some good open source editing programs), you will be able to zoom in on certain areas of the coin without losing any resolution on the coin. In full disclosure I do have a USB microscope and because of my eye sight I will use it on the lowest magnification possible. If I think I have found something I will then take the coin and set it up for me to take photos. I Have also found, that cropping both obverse and reverse will in it self will enlarge the photo. So on and on, you will finally get to what you want to post (at least it works for me).

Thanks
