What's the difference between a Blank and a Planchet ?

#1 Unread post by Paul »

:eureka:

a "blank" is what is punched out of a long strip of metal known as a planchet strip. These round metal discs are known as "Type 1 blanks". These are flat on their edges and do not have a rim as of yet. These blanks are then squeezed through a machine called a "Upsetting Mill", which reduces their diameter and compresses them, which in turn forces up a raised rim, these are then called "Type 2 planchet's"

... So for quick identification purposes, blanks have no rims while planchet's do have rims.

According to NGC, there is a third "planchet".

Type 1 Blank is that formed by punching the metal strip to create a a circular disc. The edge is sharp and the surfaces flat.
Type 2 Blank is that formed by passing the Type 1 through the burnishing drum. The edge is smoothed and the surfaces flat.
Planchet is that formed by passing the Type 2 through the Upsetting Mill. The edge is smooth and slightly fattened for rim formation.
