Please Read Before Posting A Topic

In the title please put date, denomination and type of coin design and a brief on what you are asking about.
In example: "1995 Lincoln Cent Missing 5" or "2010 Roosevelt Dime With a Line inside the rim".

All of this helps discern the different topics from each other and is much less confusing to members who want to help.
Topic titles like "how did this happen" or "help" often get ignored and lost in the confusion.

Is this a new discovery error on my 1901 indian head penny?

#1 Unread post by tkNorris98 »

Can you see this coin and tell me if this is a new error found I've looked and don't see it anywhere. The lips to my 1901 indian head penny are weird looking. Also on the united lettering it's almost like it has something else in the background like a misprint. Mainly the caved in lips are my question.

You're looking with way to much magnification.
Also, please when posting photos of a coin you would like someone to look at, you NEED to post a Cropped photo of both the the full Obverse and Reverse. Try to take these photos as clear and close as possible. Next take some photos of the area in question, again as close and clear as possible. It would also help if you could find some way to point to the area in question or give a detailed explanation of what you want to be looked at. DO NOT just say "What Error is this?", "What do you think about this coin and what is the value?" or "What can you tell me about this coin?". We would happily provide you with sites you can research coin errors and varieties.

If you need a photo editing program, there are three free ones that come to mind. They are PhotoScape, Inkscape and Gimp. Of the three PhotoScape is the easiest to use. I use PhotoScape and it will do everything required to post photos on the board. I’l say that’s circulation hits and scratches, no value here.

Thank you for all the information. For some reason I thought I grabbed the full pictures but I do see now I'm so shaky you couldn't see the photos close up anyways. I'll Fina a way to get better photos and repost correctly grabbing the correct pictures and I will spend some time reading how to post pictures and the forum requirements. Thanks again

To save you some time:
Save Yourself time, effort, and disappointment...don’t learn the coin hobby backwards. 😊

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage.

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.
