SMS?

#1 Unread post by IdahoJ »

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND A SMS DESIGNATION IS BETWEEN BUSINESS STRIKE AND PROOF. IF YOU HAVE TWO MODERN COINS ONE GRADED SMS MS68, THE OTHER IS BUSINESS STRIKE GRADED MS68. WOULD THE VALUE BE HIGHER FOR THE SMS OR BUSINESS? IS THE SMS A SPECIAL RUN OR IS IT PULLED OUT OF BUSINESS STRIKE COINS? LET'S SAY THEY ARE BOTH THE TOP GRADE IN BOTH STRIKES.

SMS stands for "Special Mint Set". These coins are struck for collectors and not generally introduced into the business strike circulating coins.

I do see, quite often, that a SMS set for a certain years will command a higher value if it is in its original packaging. Most numismatic collector books will have lists of these sets and their values.

So I called NGC. I was still confused some about the SMS. The reason is because it's a 2007 quarter. When I called they looked up the coin and they didn't have an answer! So the kind lady looked up the topic and sent me this link. I knew of the 60's SMS but the not the more modern stuff. The end of the article is what interested me the most.

The mint sets starting in 2005 are satin finish but they're very common.
