CAC stickers
Ok. So, being fairly new to buying slabbed coins, I wanted to know more about these CAC stickers you see out there . I go to https://www.caccoin.com/ and find out it cost $15 ( up to $10,000 insured ) and takes 8 weeks for a membership application. Other than that, I know very little about this Highly prestigious company .
Right now reports say the added value to a coin can go up significantly . Ok that's great, but what about the future ? Is it worth the $15 plus dollars ? How has your experience with them been ?

Re: CAC stickers
I have mostly loose coins, but coins in the slabs do seem to sell higher cause of them being verified and graded
but also depends on the coins; year; and person your selling too.
I have a Roosevelt Dime in Slab MS-67 website says retail is 60 dollars, I know If I sell to dealer I will not get 60 dollars; however due to the coin being newer and low demand, I was only offered 4 dollars for it.
I have another coin the same dealer advised was a possible MS-65+ and advised getting graded, as is he would purchase the coin for 64 dollars, but if was in case, he said he would purchase for 279 (was awhile ago, I think was a Morgan Dollar I have)

Re: CAC stickers
Check the price guides on the specific date to see if what the dealer is saying is true

Re: CAC stickers
The CAC sticker is another way in which a company found to make money from the hobby. Its a business - so that is not a negative comment.
They take advantage of the fact that the masses will pay more money if an expert at CAC decided an expert at PCGS, NGC etc. did their job well or not. The human psychological "need" for an expert opinion is what fuels the fire.
The interesting thing to me is that lets say we have a slabbed 1895 Eagle that makes MS64. It gets sent in for a CAC and gets a Green Bean (as they are nicknamed) sticker.
Break the eagle out, resubmit it, even to the same grading company, and there is no guarantee it will get an MS64 again.
So what about the CAC that was on the slab of the coin that the experts (this time) no linger deemed an MS64? CAC assessed a grade that went away as soon as the plastic was broken! And someone paid them to do it b/c the masses will pay more without doing homework.
Granted CAC may have said the MS64 grade was high enough. And that THE hobby experts/authorities at the slabbing companies were not as expert as the CAC experts claim to be. So just ghow did people sleep at night before CAC came along to grade how well the graders did?
The internet has made slabs popular. The internet also opened the door to CAC being able to say they could check the experts. How long will the following be before its reality? Don't laugh too hard at the ridiculous of this. When the slabbing companies were started, the general consensus was they were more or less almost a scam trying to make money off of the hobby by saying they were the self proclaimed experts. We used to joke some day people would pay someone to grade what the graders had already put on a slab, but we knew (pardon this is not a negative slam in this post, it is what we actually said back then) no one would be dumb enough to be suckered into paying some experts to grade the cslab that person had already paid The experts to grade!
Until the system is scientifically verifiable, the stickers will continue to bring money to the company. If a scientific method is RE-employed then the stickers will not do well b/c a coin will always have an actual grade based on the coin itself and not the graders opinions. In the 90s the main slabbing companies DID have a laser scanning and computerized grading system that was consistent. But since people did not have personal computers, computers will still not trusted, so the systems did not do well. Of course nowadays the systems would be accepted, but the slabbing companies would lose the resubmissions they get so many of with people trying to get a better grade on the label.
Slabs are not evil and niether is CAC. But I personally feel a day of reckoning is coming when a system is re-introduced that will grade the coin itself consistently. And...I also totally believe an iPhone app could be made to do it. The infra red scanner for face recognition takes 30 thousand data point in a minuscule part of a second and is good enough to ID the owner even if they have grown a beard etc. This would likely make slabs and CACs follow Beanie Babies in that the opinion-based grades would be cancelled with fact. Its now 20 years since the tech was there. And by now its likely handheld.
Just be educated as to the facts behind these systems. Personally I would pay nothing more for a slabbed coin or a slabbed CAC'd coin. The more I study the companies in detail, the less and less impressed I am with their modern product. Buy the coin and not the slab. But if you enjoy slabs, then that's how you like your hobby - no right or wrong - hobbies are about fun.

Re: CAC stickers
I know. I can only afford the bare minimum . It deters people from getting coins graded. It cost $50 a coin before it's all over. Unless your sending in a bunch of coins, it's not worth it unless the coin is worth at least $150 , no ?

Re: CAC stickers
I personally would not send off to have any of my coins graded; I have purchased coins already graded, sure, below are some of my reasons:SensibleSal66 wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 9:34 pm I know. 1. the price, like you said it is about 50 per coin, unless bulk order, most coins I have I am not selling and If I do they are not worth 50+
2. Shipping, what happens when your coin gets lost in mail?
3. the Grade, you send the coin off, you think it should be a high grade and be worth a few hundred or thousand etc. but what if they low grade it and not worth as much
4. Still finding a buyer, just because the website or book says that coin at that grade is worth 200 dollars, doesn't mean you will be able to sell it for that, have to find the right person
you might can find a local dealer and have them submit the coin in a bulk order so would be cheaper if you really wanna
Just my 2 cents worth
Thank you,
Patrick

I have my personal thoughts that I have shared in a previous thread, so no reason to go into it again.
