when one is listed it says its the 1st or 2nd printing---just wondering how they can tell---thanks for the help---

Every series, and denomination within the series can vary in # of printings. The only way to tell which printing is by serial number - the printing isn't marked on the bill. A good guide to printings by S/N is " A Concise Catalog of Military Payment Certificates" by Carlson Chambliss.
