Morgans will always carry a premium over silver, in my opinion. Even if silver does go way down again (as you implied, I wouldn't be surprised if it does), you'd still be able to make your money back off of those if not a little more than what you paid.

I am no expert, but when valuing the silver content in a coin, I look to http://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html

The local coin shop that I have my wife visit for me has a collection of coins for guys like me who like to collect for silver value. They are mostly common date coins. This trip, I wanted a Morgan dollar for my collection. This is how he presented it to my wife.

Since I was wanting one just as a specimen and not for its collector's value, I had her pick one out of the $25 lot. This is what she got me.

For $25, I think I did okay. I'm happy. I don't know what a coin shop would pay me for the coin. Melt is about $19.

I suppose for purely investing reasons, I would probably be better off sticking to bullion coins where I should always get melt and my premiums aren't quite as high.

I remember back before the obama Great Depression that silver was lower...12.00 face or so. Yet the local coin shop still had generic Morgans and Peace dollars at 23-25.00.
I believe the concept of them being a MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR means people tend to value them also as pieces of history and not just silver to be melted.
