1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). Our community is not a soap box for complaining or drama, so please refrain from doing so here.[/size]

Re: is this cleaned?
Unless they are the ones who do it :)
Cleaned = removal/altering of metal. Cleaning can include tiny scratches resulting from wiping/rubbing. Cleaning can include removing/altering the micro surface features on the coin's surface that reflect the light to produce original mint luster.
Conserved - removal of substance without altering the metal in any way. Spilling coffee on a coin not good. Rinsing with water (and drying in a method so the coin surface is not altered/scratched) to remove the coffee does not alter the coin itself - hence the hobby normally defines this as conserving. It is impossible to tell conservation has occurred if the person who conserved the coin does it properly.

Restoration/Conservation...............?
Here is a mid die state, almost no contact specimen I tried!
It was returned uglier than when I sent it.

Hmmm, interesting, I bought mine used and found one Bojangles chicken sandwich wrapper and a Taco Bell Taco wrapper left inside as book marks. This wasn't your book was it?

Re: is this cleaned?
Hey P, that is horrible, what service? Man I see this and I cannot imagine how frustrating this must have been. Copper is an interesting element, it really will not be damaged by cold distilled water, however if you sneeze on it, or get your acidic grubby fingers on it, you will show marks. Someone with a cold can have a mucus of 8.3, 8.0 is generally considered the norm for sea water, and of course we all know what seawater does to Copper.
It amazes me what these people get away with sometimes. The surface of that coin is like a mirror, any little thing will show up. It demonstrates to me how much they care, or better said, don't care.

Re: is this cleaned?
This was coin #3, in a gripe of 4........
What you're seeing is the dirty discolored cleaning solution that they used on the previous 2 coins, that has dripped on the surface of this one,......
You can even see how dirty the solution was by the fingerprint left by the numismatic restoration professional, on the outer rim.
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Re: is this cleaned?
I admit I am not surprised. Too much of this can be seen/found on forums where people post similar things.
I was just trying to lay out the definitions generally used in the hobby. I doubt I will ever pay a company to conserve a coin for me. And I do not think they are above cleaning it (removing metal and altering the coin) while calling it the more market friendly term, "conserving."
