1965 SMS sets

#1 Unread post by BillyBob »

I see lots of 65 sets in cello and the 66 and 67 in hard cases. In a couple of instances, I've seen 65 sets in the same hard cases as 66 and 67. Were any of these hard case 65s produced by the mint?

I don't know why I immediately thought half dollars. I was going to move this post but don't know where to put it. Anyway, I wanted to add that the hard case I was referring to was the exact same kind as the 66 and 67 sets. You can't tell what year they are for except for the date on the coins. I have also seen 'this set' in a clear plastic case. Who knows for sure they are SMS coins? I don't have that expertise. Thoughts on any and all of it.

1965 sets only came in the cello packs. 66 and 67 came in the hard plastic cases. That's all I have ever seen as well as what the red books says. Any 65 in hard cases would be after market, but I wouldn't trust authentication of the 65 outside of the cello packs. No mint marks were used on either San Francisco SMS and Philly produced coins.
There is a difference in appearance between them, and one would have to have experience in studying both types to know the difference. I am not that experienced so i just stick with the OGP if I want the 65 SMS.
I'm sure the experts will chime in if I am mistaken.
Are you looking for sets or the just the 40% silver Kennedy? if that's all your interested in then it doesn't matter really. unless you're looking to grade and want it SMS designation, but it is a tough one to grade high enough to merit the costs in my opinion.

Thanks for the opinion DanB. I had a feeling that the coins had been moved to another holder. The holders were the ones from the mint, identical to 66 and 67, I suppose someone opened a 66 or 67 set for whatever purpose and put 65 coins in it. I've seen that twice. I've seen those in aftermarket type plastic holders, and I was even more suspect of those coins.
I wanted an actual 65 set, actually the 66 and 67 too. I'm surprised at their prices. Gotta have it. The Kennedy collection is low hanging fruit for most but that's what I'm after including the SMS sets.
