1812 Capped Bust Counterfeit?
Hello Y'all! New here as of last week and I've recently started inspecting and selling a small coin collection left by my father. Among the coins is an 1812 Capped Bust with a hole in it. I was tickled to see that Philrs4 also had one of those with a hole and posted a question about it on the day I first joined. A fine coincidence!
My question is different . . . I sold mine on Mercari and shortly after the buyer received it he alerted me and Mercari staff that the coin wasn't silver and was a counterfeit. He showed that he had performed a chemical test which indicated that the coin was not silver and therefore must be a counterfeit. He asked me and Mercari to okay a return of this "counterfeit" coin to me and the funds paid back to him. I said that I would very surprised if the coin did not have the appropriate silver content and even more surprised if the coin was indeed counterfeit but I was fine with the return. My question to this community is has anyone ever heard of a counterfeit 1812 Capped Bust? I would also note that the edge of this coin has been stamped with "Half Dollar" and some other characters that I cannot make out. Is this commonly done?
Thank you all. I look forward to hearing from some of you.

Did you weigh it? The real 1812 Sliver Half Dollars are ~13.50 grams (Holed ones weigh less)

I have only a digital kitchen scale and it shows just 13 grams. The scale indicated 12 and then immediately 13 so I'd guess it's 13.0 or so and thus 1/2 a gram light.
Thank you Paul!
Thank you Paul!

Hey J, if you have a coin shop in your area that you trust, and they have a sigma machine maybe they would test it for you

Re: 1812 Capped Bust Counterfeit?
I am being serious when I say it would be hard to find a coin that has not been counterfeited. A company called Big Tree in China, back years ago when eBay allowed it, was selling fakes even for common date wheat pennies. Of course the ones in the pictures on eBay had the word COPY on them, but the coins were available without the marking on them as well.My question to this community is has anyone ever heard of a counterfeit 1812 Capped Bust?
I cannot understand why they copied common coins since the real ones would not go for the 2.00 Bug Tree was asking for them. In the right places, these coins can still be had online as they are still being made.

That poor thing was holed, cleaned, and possibly plugged above the current hole and redrilled. That's a lot of effort for a fake coin. I think it's real but has had a rough life.

Sorry, I meant to also comment that this one looks fine to me. I do not believe it is a fake.

Re: 1812 Capped Bust Counterfeit?
Yes thank you BMH, Daniel and Earle42! I'm rather convinced that the buyer (ex-) had more test equipment than necessary and had to find a reason for that. I'm grateful to all of you for your time and efforts!
