1909 VDB Matte finish
What is going on with the obverse is that a lamination issue or was it cleaned@sometime?
Is it a proof state or a mint state?
Is it worth the effort2b graded?
Abit confused

Re: 1909 VDB Matte finish
It's not proof or matte just a normal 1909 VDB with some improper alloy mixture. Common on these.

Yikes! Great coin, Melody! First thing, as Daniel always says, go to eBay sold auctions to see what people are paying for this coin. PCGS Price Guide also has a link to recent sold auctions so you can see about what it would go for. Given the condition of this coin, you should be able to get more than a penny for it :) Good luck!

Re: 1909 VDB Matte finish
I would try and compare your coin on the PCGS photograde page. Hold your coin up to the screen to see where it fits, it should give you a better ballpark of possible grade to research sold listings.
Red book and the like are guides to the value, not necessarily what you will get. Ebay/heritage sold listings are better for what people are actually paying.

Re: 1909 VDB Matte finish
The boos you mention, while definitely standards in the hobby, all have the prices way too elevated for what actual prices are. I own al three myself as references but understand the listed prices are there just to let me know whether the coin is face value, somewhat desired, or greatly desired in the hobby.
Part of the elevated prices is b/c the books list what you would expect to PAY for one (not get when selling - I know, seems contradictory, but in real life its not). Another reason they prices are too high is that they only have once chance to guess what price might be somewhat correct in the coming year. So they set them higher. unlike eBay, the prices in the books are static.

If you cannot find one on eBay sold, shoot us a pic and we can help you find it. After awhile you will be practiced enough to find them for yourself.Melodyinusa.ms wrote: ↑Thu Oct 08, 2020 12:21 pm I get so frustrated trying 2find a coin that resemble mine on sold lists.

This is an excellent example of coins that have been graded/attributed/valued on a flip by undereducated collectors.

Very rarely will you find two coins that look alike, this will not add any value to the coin.
