Double Strike/Double Die

#1 Unread post by Edoginlodi »

Hello everyone,

Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between a double die and double strike? I am new to collecting so I am still learning. Your help is very much appreciated!😊

A doubled strike is when the die strikes a coin and something goes wrong and it is not ejected from the coining chamber and is struck by the die again. Often another coin or coins enter the chamber and they become bonded multi-strike.

A doubled die occurs when the die is created and and has nothing to do with striking a coin. It is after the die is created with a doubled coin design does it strike and impart this to a coin.
