1890-08 Chinese coin Grade estimate please?

#1 Unread post by KwangT »

I am a new member and realize it is difficult to accurate predict a grade based on a photo. But please if anyone could just give me an idea of what it might be, I would be thankful.

Thanks sal. With all of the counterfit Chinese coins coming out of there, I think I might pass this one up. I can't see it being graded above an AU 58 anyway.

Just a thought here.

Grading a coin is based largely upon the amount of wear on the coin. We are all familiar with how the Red Book and other sources describe which details to specifically look at.

In a video entitled "CoinWeek: We Take the PCGS Grading Challenge! - 4K Video," former PCGS president Ron Guth says that anyone can grade. My Guth says all it takes to grade is exposure to hundreds of coins.

We all know that each coin has its specific areas that have to be evaluated for wear. This is why hundreds of, let's say, Mercury dimes are needed to be studied with an eye to grading in order to be able to grade them.

This raises a question in my mind. Just where does a company find someone who has handled hundreds of this same coin in order to get an eye for how to properly grade it by the wear of the details of the design?

It reminds me of recently someone posting, I believe it was, a graded blank planchet. Just how can this be valid?

I admit at present I am leaning towards the idea of "Pay them and they will slab" coming into play here. They already have a faithful following of enough people that are just willing to take the company's word for whatever appears on the slab. I have never see this concept studied/answered before.

No clue on the grade but I do like the style of these Republic's! I have a Hu Peh 10 cash from almost the same years. I think these are on the Photograde website and/or app. Hope that helps!
Keep on collecting...
Cheers!
