Is World and Ancient the Same As Foreign?

#1 Unread post by Samstone11 »

My son and I have accumulated hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of coins from all over the world. Some are old, some used to have value but either got demonetized (I hope that's a real word), or seem to have smallpox(or something else pretty bad happened to them). Some are silver, some want to grow up to be silver some day, and any other variables imaginable. I have failed at finding a resource suitable for amateurs to research these things. I think we want to identify which ones are silver and with luck we probably should sell for college money I can no longer afford. I have to believe there may be some with intrinsic value as well, so we would appreciate counsel on determining which we should consider keeping and which we just take to wherever you take these things and trade $1 face value for 10 cents and know that's the best deal we will be able to find. I counted over 125 different countries and need direction. We're thinking we would like to sort these out before we get too deep in US coins.

Is that sensible?

Between domestic and not so much domestic coins we have so many I'm thinking my great great great great grandchildren may have to finish the research for us.

By the way, I value honesty so you can be as direct with me as you want. Just be civil and I will always return that same respect. No matter what thanks for any time anyone donates.

Honesty is the best policy!
So first - welcome and it is good to have you here.
Second...I do not envy you your task LOL!

A lot of foreign coinage, at least here in the States, is not worth much. People in their own countries often do like their own coins though.

You can find foreign coin boxes at shows easily with multiple coins selling for a dollar. I have heard of one collector on a forum who knows aneough about foreign coins that he looks through these boxes and finds some great bargains. But a lot of US dealers just dump them all in together. Sometimes this includes the silver b/c different countries used different amounts of silver in their coins so even trying to seel them for melt can be an ordeal.

Of course there are exceptions. Any large silver coin is generally collectible (like a silver Panama Un Balboa). And there are some countries's coinage with a following in the States. Some of those are Canadian, Cuban, Phillipines, Mexican, possibly Brit and maybe Aussie as well.

But its likely you cannot find reliable sources b/c there are not enough people specializing in the coins of a specific country to make a reference site.

I also know some countries did not make coins in all years, and some things like mintages may not even be available anymore for some coins.

Welcome to the community! I suggest using ebay sold auctions to get an idea of what the coins have sold for. You might visit coinzip.com and find a local coin club to join. You can get help that way as well.
