What is silvered?

#1 Unread post by RomanGreekCoins »

I am curious about this Aurelian

is it MODERN silver plated?
Or was it done officially?

listing states

Aurelian FORTVNA REDVX Antoninianus

This AE antoninanus, which still retains some of the original silvering with which it was covered, was struck early in the reign of Aurelian (270-275 AD) in the city of Mediolanum (modern day Milan, Italy).

This type is distinguished by the long, thin neck on the emperor. It is quite distinctive. The coin has good details and and deep green patina, along with some silvering.

The reverse design and legend, FORTVNA REDVX, refers to the emperor's return, usually from battle. This coin may honor Aurelian, whose nickname was "manu ad ferrum" ("hand on hilt"), after he had defeated Quintillus in the east in 270 AD and was returning to Italy to assume the throne.

(Diameter: 22 mm. Weight: 3.36 grams)

OB: Radiate and cuirassed bust, right - IMP AVRELIANVS AVG

REV: Fortuna seated left, on wheel, holding rudder and cornucopiae - FORTVNA REDVX

Struck at the Mediolanum mint in 270-271 AD, this coin looks to have the mint mark * S (the star is missing from the flange) is attributed as RIC, Vol. V, Part 1, #128.

But is it really original? Why would they silver it i its true?

Did Aurelian have a true silver denarius?
