Had some good luck tonight!

#1 Unread post by Nolifeking »

Well I hit the yard again. I was focusing on just digging any target iron or not just so I can clean up the yard and hopefully clear it out enough to get some coin signals that might be hiding with the iron nails. I dug 42 iron nails tonight. Here are my goodies for my hard work though.

1897 Barber (My first barber dime!)
1923 Merc
Last is some sort of tack. Not a coin, but I thought it was interesting. It looks big in the pic, but its smaller that a time. A little smaller than a half dime. Any thoughts on what it was for?

Great finds. There was a civil war unit from your state , the 31st Wisconsin. Is that tack steel or iron? You may have a civil war relic. Tacks were sometimes used as identifiers on equipment. It might be worth researching, if the metal is right for the period. It looks period. Dan

It's possible. There was a training camp roughly 2 mile from my place. But the house wasn't there back then. I've had one person tell me it is a railroad tie tack. Seems to fit better. The 31 is the date so if it is a tie tack it was prob lost back in 1931

I probably could. I have to have over 50 pounds of iron from nails to bits of iron in just one year. I don't know why but I keep it all. I have 3 plastics sacks full of pop cans, pull tabs, nails/iron, and pieces of copper pipes. Someday I'll look through it all and go see the scrap metal man. Might have 50 cents worth of iron :l

A little story for ya. I've been planning on finding out if I can search the local school as I've heard they are full of junk. My buddy called me today and said his 11 year old came home with a large penny he found in the playground yesterday. He could see one cent and described the head with Liberty on it. I told him not to clean it and bring it up so I can soak in Verdi Care and see what happens.

Sounds like a great find if it is a Large Cent. Is it an old school or something?

I'm sure it is a large cent from his description..but the school is not that old...maybe 50 years.I think some kid probably lost it..a gift from grandpa or something like that.He turned it in, but after 30 days, nobody claimed it (I left out that part above for brevity)

Great finds. The picture with the 31 on it is a railroad date nail. They were put in the ties so they know what year they were put in. I used to work for a railroad. I have about 35 different ones myself.
