New Oldest Coin

#1 Unread post by silverhorse65 »

Just started metal detecting two years ago. Started with a Fisher F22 last year and mostly just did coin shooting in parks and ball fields. Upgraded to an Equinox 600 at the beginning of June. Just achieved a new "oldest coin" yesterday detecting a park in a small town in Southwest Iowa. I couldn't tell what it was at first with the naked eye. It wasn't until I put my 5x magnifier from I Phone on it that I realized it was an 1871 Seated Liberty Dime. I'd detected that park one other time this summer and didn't find much, same on this short 30 minute hunt. Fortunately, it was right up against a tree and under a root. Probably why it was still there! Also, looks like it's been there for a while. The town I found it in wasn't actually incorporated until 1881.

Here it is...

Nice find even if it's a little rough . I've detected for 7 years and never found a seated . Most of my coins are colonials and early 1900's.
